Serving Our Community & Helping Our Environment

Welcome! Thanks for visiting. We appreciate it. We’re the men and women who operate and maintain Hamilton Street Railway buses. We’ve been serving Hamilton , Ontario ’s public transit needs since 1899.

Public transit in Hamilton began as an economic development strategy. It was vital to both our industrial and commercial growth that residents be able to travel easily around the city - to work, shop or visit - on low-cost, safe and reliable transit.

Over the years, private cars took over as main way people get around the city. But for many thousands of Hamiltonians, especially the single mothers, unemployed, young, the old, the Hamilton Street Railway (HSR) still remains their main connection to the larger community and main source of transportation to get arround.

Today, the value of public transit is rising again, this time for both environmental reasons - which are well-known - and new economic reasons, not just the rising price of fuel. For many good reasons, there is more public transit in Hamilton ’s future. There has to be.

For more than a decade, transit service demand is increasing but the service levels are not increased as much. As result, complaints about transit are increasing. Please use our our survey,(Need to Add More Transit Service).

A Transit service study which was pursued and negotiated by Amalgamated Transit Union Local 107 (ATU Local 107) during 2007 negotiations, was completed by IBI Group in 2009. This study revealed that City of Hamilton needs to add 30 Million Dollors to the current Transit Budget to have an adiquade transit service in the Greater Hamilton Area. The union made several presentations to the City Council to make the council aware that the transit service has deteriated and it is way below the acceptable levels. It is causing hardship on the Drivers as they are unable to maintain schedules, missing the connections, arriving late at destinations, sacrificing the safety and violating HTA. More over, can not pick people up as the buses are too full. As result, drivers are assaulted verbaly and physically on a regular basis. In early part of 2011, the city of Hamilton approved 3 Million Dollors to improve and add some of the service. The HSR Management still sitting on that money, which should have been spent by now to improve and add more service. You as Tax Payers, Riders and residents of this great city, need to have your voice heard. Call your Councillor or HSR and ask to improve and add Transit service.

Yesterday, today and tomorrow, the men and women of ATU 107 were, are, and will be here for Hamilton . Public transit is our life and by doing our jobs, we help give life to our city.

See you on the bus!
